well ...my first connection with progressive music -without know what was it(i was only 13 if i remember well)-just from instict...was the "Moving Pictures" / RUSH...that was my first shock!
after that..PINK FLOYD,,ELOY,,CAMEL,,KING CRIMSON,,JETHRO TULL,and until our days,RIVERSIDE,,WOLVERINE,,MOSTLY AUTUMN,,RPWL,,PENDRAGON,,PHIDEAUX,,DEADSOUL TRIBE,,SOUL CAGES...and as you say...every song tells a story...with the hand to my heart....i believe that..."THE WALL" from 'PINK FLOYD' made a history....it made the world upside down! it had and has until now the 'magic' secret that i can't explain...it may be with that way...just happened...and after all..now they are history ! legends! until now every time i here this album i still believe that something new i'll find !

Very nice list many great contenders here.
Who can argue with this one simply amazing.
I used to go tot he local planetarium to see the Friday Night Rock shows....I still remember "Pigs" being projected on the dome. Ah, I just told my age!
Still a great experience
Brian

definitly on my top three list
The best prog album/s of all time, depends on prog genre but I would go for these across all types of Prog

Rush 2112 or Hemispheres
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
IQ Tales From The Lush Attic or Frequency
Camel The Snow Goose
Yes Close To The Edge Relayer The Yes Album
Genesis Nursery Cryme Selling England By The Pound
Marrillion Script For A Jesters Tear
Pallas The Sentinel
Porcupine Tree Lightbulb Sun
Blind Ego Numb
Have you been looking at my list you have chosen many great albums for sure.
The first album that comes to mind for me is Genesis' "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway". But then I feel that I'm not showing enough respect to "Going For The One" by YES. To pick just one is impossible, there are soooo many brilliant Prog albums!!! You're killing me over here lol! But Helen makes a good point, it should be an album that was life changing, and so it should be different for everyone. :) Did I mention "Hemispheres" by RUSH? No...well, that one too!!! LOL! I think that was the album for me. After I heard that, there was no going back, I became a serious PROGGER for life. Cheers!
Is there such a thing? I mean "all time" is a long time, and for me my favorite right now is 'Building An Empire" by Demians.

Based on sales and overall popularity (dare I use that word here?) I'd have to say Dark Side of the Moon. But My favorite was The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis.
I would have a hard time to choose the best prog album pf all time.It changes and is different to everyone of us.As a band,Porcupine Tree is above most for Me

Ah it could become the best Prog album 0f 2009... but not the best of all times.
