Jim Crean - Velvet Crush
Melodic Revolution Records
This CD is quite simply twelve slices of melodic rock pie with a poppy filling. It pushes all the right buttons - tight, crunchy guitar riffs, clean production, crisp, concise and classy solos over a seamless backing. As with a lot of the more successful hard pop-rock, the excellent harmonies raise the standards and enhance the neat vocal hooks. Crean himself has a little of Adams’ gravel but a Joe Elliott register. There are some catchy gems on here, and ‘Make It’ is an absolutely stunning power ballad. In a previous era, I am sure this album would have been huge. As it stands, this pleasingly slightly retro album is a sterling effort and Mr Cream deserves praise. File alongside early Bryan Adams, The Outfield or the aforementioned Def Leppard. DP
