Band

Symphonic Rock
Biography
The long story dates back to 1980 when best friends Niklas and Tomas both got their first acoustic guitars for Christmas. The ten-year-olds emediately started playing and within a year or so they had written their first handful of songs. They soon got a band together and became a well known pop-act in the Stockholm suburb. The years and styles passed. School was out and the band broke up. While Tomas got involved with the making of world-famous country/techno pioneers Rednex, Niklas started writing acoustic instrumental music for the drawer alongside playing the renaissance lute with music/drama-troup Romeo & Juliet Choir of the Royal Dramatic Theatre, touring from Mexico over the Balkans to Tibet. No growing apart here really, it was just life moving along. There was still a lot of affinity between the two, but they found themselves having no apparent musical common-ground anymore – until King Crimson released Thrakk 1995. Riffs and licks burst forth in Tomas’s garage studio, bits and pieces that eventually became Good Friday, Grand Illusion and Riverrun. Niklas says: “I had been listening to all the prog giants for years and years, but had never pictured myself writing songs in that fasion – partly because of the complexity of the style, partly because I couldn’t see who would want to play it with me”. He must have been blind, not considering his and Tomas’s old friend, bassplayer and prog-fan, David for the job! Maybe it was his roll as A&R-man at Universal Music that put the blind-fold on, who knows. David has proved himself an important contributor to the Pikebay sound and groove. Working at the Royal Opera, Tomas on his hand had met a percussionist who, tired of blinging and blonging strange pieces of metal, longed to get behind a proper drum-kit and just bang away! Roger with his solid career in jazz and classical music, his professional skill and his unbreakable enthusiasm became an indispensible part of the band. Roger also has access to a nice rehearsal-studio at The Opera Set-shop in Gäddviken, a secluded setting just outside Stockholm centre which translates: Pikebay!

Welcome to Pikebay, a world of adventures and topographic secrets. A fragile realm in shades of magenta and crimson, where an ever billowing carpet of emerald lies on a bed of crimson granite rock with popping bladderkelp waving in the rush of the currents. It may not look or sound much from above, but underneath the surface is a roaring throng of creatures, fierce and gentle, giant and tiny, amongst the weeds and slimy waters. In this world a queer fish is king
