Biography
Legend is a progressive / folk / symphonic Rock band that have a Pagan / Wiccan influence to their music and lyrics.

Members:
Steve Paine - Keys
John Macklin- Drums
Debbie Chapman - Vocals
Paul Thomson - Guitars

The Band that time forgot.
Founded in 1988 by keyboard player / producer Steve Paine, Legend perform epic songs, that twist and turn effortlessly through a myriad of time and tempos. Mystical lyrics, delivered by soaring almost operatic female vocals and powerful melodic guitars and layered keyboard textures, held together by a tight, punchy and precise rhythm section. These are the hallmarks of Legend. An archetypical progressive / symphonic rock band or if you prefer a dinosaur. Legend are not ‘fashionable’, ‘chic’ or ‘in vogue’ they are unusual and unique and they are here to stay. So if you like Rush, Jethro Tull, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Yes, Solstice, Steeleye Span, Renaissance... the list goes on... then you will probably like Legend.
Legend’s songs are woven around mystical and pagan themes, folklore and archetypal myths they are about passion – not fashion. This has led them to success in Japan and Europe, despite never really making the breakthrough in the UK. They have released 3 CD albums and a Live concert Video and after 21 years are about to release a ‘best of’ CD entitled ‘Ritual Echo’ and re-release their concert video on DVD and for the first time on CD.
And just when you thought it was safe... Plans are afoot to record a new album in 2010... so watch out for ‘Cardinal Points’.

Triple Aspect - Amazon Review:

It was difficult to make '70s-style progressive rock in the '90s. How could you avoid infusing it with the riffs, rhythms and timbres of modern metal or techno? And if you did, how could you prevent it from sounding stale, sounding like the pastiche it was?

Miraculously, Legend achieved this - this is the equal of anything Yes, Rush, Camel, Jethro Tull, Renaissance or Steeleye Span produced in the '70s (and if you think that last name is out of place...I'm giving reference points for the sound of the album). In terms of sonic integrity it can't be faulted - there are no out-of-place synth or guitar timbres that instantly date it, it really could have come from the '70s AND been hailed as a classic in that decade. Or to put it another way, while it never sounds exactly like any of the above, it's unmistakeably a product of the same mindset.

The vocals - wow! Imagine an classically-trained Maddy Prior - or maybe a voice with all the power of Annie Haslam but with a wee bit more grit, more edge.

Much could be said of the `short' songs - e.g `Holly King', which may be a song about the winter solstice with a neo-medieval verse melody, but make no mistake it outclasses any similarly-designed Tull song! But the major selling-point here is `Triple Aspect' itself, the thirty-minute suite which dominates the album. Lyrically it's outstanding: it could be interpreted as pagan-religious devotional music - a hymn to the mother goddess, or simply as a hymn to womankind. Musically...let's just say it's as powerful in its way as `2112' and `Thick As A Brick Part 1', both of which it echoes (but only momentarily). It is, it must be said, slightly over-extended: in particular the overture (being a foretaste of each of the three major movements) goes on for too long. But such complaints will seem pathetic and purposeless by the time you reach the anthemic (and truly inspiring) final movement.

LEGEND's Blog

OK so its late

Posted on March 26, 2010 at 12:11pm 0 Comments

Well February has just zipped by... hence the late blog just too much happening all at once! (Well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!) Firstly John Macklin and I got together to thrash out a few ideas and to

just generally catch up with life and what's been happening. Ritual

Echo has had some very positive reviews - plus the usual handful of

insults - though none of them funny (which is a shame as I treasure the

wit of some of the reviewers out there…

Well first of all I wish to say a big thank you to everyone at Power of Prog for all of your support during 2009 and to wish you the very best of everything in 2010!

2009 has seen our first release in 13 years 'Ritual Echo' which although it is a 'Best of..' album all the tracks are fresh mixes and there are three live tracks that are previously un released. The feedback we are getting from both fans and the industry is so far very positive, but there's still plenty of time to bite… Continue

Congrats on the live CD release!

We, too, take forever to finish projects ;-) We have a few 10 or 15 year old songs that still haven't made it out yet.
