GALAHAD – THE LONG GOODBYE – AVALON RECORDS

With a relationship stretching back more than 30 years, my prog writing journey will always be inextricably linked to Galahad as theirs was the first album I bought from the underground scene, while they in turn put me in touch with another band and it all went downhill from then. I have written words for a few of their booklets, and while I have not seen them play since moving to New Zealand I am still often in contact with singer Stu Nicholson. I know this closeness means I am never nearly as objective as others when it comes to reviewing Galahad, but when a band keeps putting out wonderful albums then I feel justified in continually singing their praises. This is their twelfth studio album, and features the same line-up as with the last release, ‘The Last Great Adventurer’, namely Stu Nicholson (vocals), Dean Baker (keyboards), Spencer Luckman (drums), Lee Abraham (guitars) and Mark Spencer (bass guitar). Recorded in multiple places it was then edited, mixed and mastered by engineer/producer Karl Groom (Threshold/Dragonforce/Pendragon/Arena/Yes etc.) who has now been working with them for some time.

This is possibly the most polished release to date from the Dorset boys, with a somewhat heavier emphasis on Stu’s vocals as the band continue to evolve. When I first knew them they were solid 90’s neo prog, then moved into prog metal with the change in approach heralded by the arrival of Dean Baker and now happily straddle multiple sub-genres so while they are firmly “prog” it would be wrong to try and shoehorn them into any particular bucket. I have known Karl nearly as long as Stu, and while I always think of him first and foremost as a guitarist, he has built a richly deserved reputation on the other side of the desk, and has done wonders in bringing Spencer’s playing to the fore. When I listen back to early recordings one cannot hear all the work being put behind the kit, but when those tracks have been remastered by Karl it has been like hearing a new band, and here Spencer can be heard driving the band ever onwards. Mark is a multi-instrumentalist (and a fine singer in his own right), so his approach to the bass is quite different in that he is looking to see what he can add to the melody as well as underpinning the arrangement, while Lee is another renowned performer and his second stint in the band (he was originally bassist) as guitarist has allowed him to spread his musical wings. All this adds to the way the band keeps shifting and melding, while Dean is a musical magpie who didn’t even know what prog was until he joined the band a quarter of a century ago, and his relationship with Stu has meant they keep shifting and changing.

I mean, listen to “The Righteous and the Damned”, which commences with some acapella vocals overlaid on background noise of people walking around, but what some may not realise is that Stu is singing the words from the title cut of 2007’s ‘Empires Never Last’ before somehow the music segues into something Eastern European and folky. One of the joys of Galahad is they no longer feel shackled by any expectations so instead do whatever they want, and when this song turns into a System of a Down-style belter I was not too surprised, but was very pleased. The title cut of this album is about dealing with dementia and is very personal indeed. Stu has always had a way with words and here he paints a picture while Dean is there by his side on piano as we build into the piece. The layers gradually build as we are taken into the world of someone who is “filling up this thing which makes the water go hot, to make some drinks for people in another room whose names escape me”. Those two lines are incredibly powerful, and the arrangements allow for us to understand the emotions being displayed and the sense of loss and helplessness. As the song ends Stu takes two lines from Gabriel’s “I Don’t Remember”, which itself was about being trapped in a situation it is impossible to get out of, and delivers them in an incredibly poignant manner.

Musically this album is all over the place, from Eighties-style electronic dance through to prog metal and everything in between, yet the vocals and arrangements bring the album together so one looks forward to the next unexpected fork in the road and the detour where we move back on ourselves or in a totally different direction. Galahad consistently refuse to rest on their laurels and show no sign at all of losing inspiration or slowing down, and long may that continue. 10/10 Kev Rowland

Galahad Releases the 1998 album ‘Following Ghosts’

Well, after what seems like an age we finally have some positive Galahad news to share in the form of the rather beautiful LP release of our 1998 ‘Following Ghosts’ album in no less than THREE colors!…..

“Following on from the release of the very expansive ‘Following Ghosts’ 3CD set last year we are now very pleased to announce that, finally after being delayed somewhat by recent world events and in conjunction with our friends at Oskar Production in Poland, the album will be released as a rather lovely double gatefold vinyl LP for the first time ever.

The version on the LP will be Karl Groom’s 2019 mix which was painstakingly put together from the digitized original two-inch 24 track tapes which date back to 1997. This mix has freshened up the original tracks breathing new life into this twenty-four-year-old album.

The ‘Following Ghosts’ LP is available in several versions including a standard black vinyl version, a limited edition gold version (200 copies only), and a very limited orange and red splatter disc version of which only 100 copies have been pressed.

Each LP also contains a CD of ‘Alternative Ghosts’ which contains recently recorded alternative versions of every track from the original album.

The black and gold versions of the LP are now available to pre-order from our official website. www.galahadonline.com/galahad-merchandise

We hope to commence shipping albums during the first week of October.

The Following Ghosts LP (in all available colors) can also be ordered from the Polish partner ‘Independent Music Market’ official website: independentmusicmarket.com

We are obviously very happy to ship worldwide but our overseas friends need to be aware that because of global increases in postage and carriage costs in the last couple of years or so the carriage costs are higher than we had hoped but you can rest assured that we will only charge the actual cost of postage and packing (in some cases slightly less!) and not mark it up anyway.”

The Prog before Xmas – 2018 on Saturday 15th December 2018

Abel Ganz return with annual ‘Prog Before Christmas’ event in 2018!

Last year’s event raised the fantastic sum of almost £2500 on behalf of cancer support charity https://www.maggiescentres.org/

This year – things are being run just a little differently. A five-band bill with two bands in the afternoon, then a break, then three bands in the evening. Our line up looks like this:

Afternoon

Glen Brielle – Hugh Carter’s solo project.
Joined by several close friends in a full band line up, Hugh will debut selections from forthcoming solo release ‘Still’ – a very personal album including epic track The Journey: a musical record of the voyage of discovery that Hugh and his wife Maria set off on after his diagnosis.

Halo Tora – Recently featured in Prog magazine this young and vital band from Glasgow are rightly drawing a great deal of attention. With a fresh and exciting sound, they really do have the the potential to go very far and we are, frankly, fortunate to have them join the bill while it’s still possible to see them up close and personal! The band has just released new album‘Man of Stone: First Chapter’.

Break

Evening

Grand Tour – Hew Montgomery solo project.
Joined by Joe Cairney from Comedy of Errors on lead vocals, and with full band line up, we are absolutely thrilled that this year’s event will feature the first live performances of Hew’s solo material. Playing selections from debut album ‘On the Beach’, and tracks from new, forthcoming album ‘Clocks that tick – but never talk’ this is sure to be a highlight of this year’s event.

Abel Ganz – Organizers / hosts will showcase new material from forthcoming album ‘The Life of The Honey Bee – and other moments of clarity’ as well as some favourites from back catalogue.

Galahad – Headline act.
With a long and illustrious history, Galahad have in recent years released one great album after another! Their 2018 release ‘Seas Of Change’, the follow up to the 2017 ‘Quiet Storms’ album consists of just one massive, hugely ambitious ‘Magnum Opus’ track exceeding 42- minutes of imaginative and dramatic modern Progressive Rock. Nominated for the 2018 UK PROG awards in the ‘UK Band/Artist of the year’ category, Galahad have, astonishingly, never before played in Scotland!

We are so very pleased to welcome all our guest to The Prog Before Xmas 2018 and we hope you will agree that this is sure to be another night to remember!   Please also remember– as ever, the aim is to raise as much money for the Maggie’s charity as we possibly can.

The Prog Before Xmas – 2018

Abel Ganz is very pleased to once again stage our ‘Prog Before Christmas’ event in 2018!
As some of you may know – last year’s event, thanks to the generosity of all the bands and audience members, managed to smash our previous total and we raised the fantastic sum of almost £2500 on behalf of cancer care charity https://www.maggiescentres.org/
We are sure you will all by now be aware, we decided to donate all proceeds from our event to this great cause as it has been such an important source of support to our dear friend [and founding member of Abel Ganz] Hugh Carter – who has become something of a champion for this charity. We are very happy indeed to say that this continues to be the case and so we will again be running this year’s show on the same basis.
As has become customary we are delighted to have some very specially invited guests who have agreed to come along to help make this what is sure to be another exceptional event.
This year – we are running things just a little differently. We noticed last year that not everyone could stay on till the end of the night [as the event ran on till 1am]. Some of the feedback we got back was that, for some, a slightly earlier finish would mean people could enjoy all the music and atmosphere of the event and still make it in time for last trains and buses home. We have taken that on board and so this year we will start earlier and finish just a little earlier.
Indeed, by adding one more band to the bill our event now becomes almost a ‘mini’ one day Prog Fest. A five band bill with two bands in the afternoon, then a break, then three bands in the evening. Our line up looks like this:

The event will be held on Saturday December 15th in the Drygate Brewery in Glasgow and we expect to have tickets on sale from Sat 25th August. Please come along and enjoy a great night and support the event if you can.
