Well, the big day is here and we are super excited to announce the release of our third album ‘Venus’!
We can now finally show you the beautiful cover art by Tristan Tait which gives a window into the concept of the album, and also the track listing.
We can also confirm that pre-orders are now available with the full album to be released on Friday 11 November 2016.
For any of our long-term fans, you’d know this record has been on the cards since our debut album ‘Synthetic’ was released back in 2011. Back then, we had the skeleton of an album that was going to be our second, but the complexity of the music and depth of the concept saw it get pushed back and instead we focused on and released ‘Nebulae’.
Then, with the arrival of Nathan on drums bringing a new element, and the energy of returning to playing live shows after a long hiatus, we felt the timing was right to return to ‘Venus’. Whilst it’s safe to say the conceptual seeds were there for it back in 2011, it is an entirely different beast today and an embodiment of the collective four of us that is Hemina in 2016.
The past five years have been a journey towards building this album to be the most we could put into music. From our ambitious “proggy” beginnings on our first releases; ‘As We Know It’ and ‘Synthetic’; to developing our sound on the more alternative and concise ‘Nebulae’; we have now found our sonic feet and what we feel is the definitive Hemina lineup with ‘Venus’.
Writing ‘Venus’ has been the most collaborative experience so far, with Doug, Mitch, Nath and Jess all contributing to the songwriting process. So although many of the flavours and sounds will be familiar to those who know us, we most certainly are treading new ground and this is the most adventurous we have been.
This album was entirely self-recorded by us, with Dougie and Nath being the main drivers behind the production, engineering and mixing with the exception being the mastering of the album by Ermin Hamidovic (Periphery, Devin Townsend and Plini) which provided the final polishing touches.
In announcing ‘Venus’ we’d like to present you with the lyric video to the first single ‘Moonlight Bride’.
Although the concept of the record will be elaborated on later, this song represents the idea of learning to accept one’s self warts and all; to not be prejudiced towards others, and to touch on the complex and sometimes troubling ways in which people interact in the modern age of social media and the Internet.
We’d also like to officially announce that pre-orders of ‘Venus’ are now available in links at the bottom of this page.
If you head on over to our Bandcamp store we have digital downloads, digipaks and shirts available for preorder. All music preorders will come with an immediate download of ‘Moonlight Bride’, as well as ‘You’, a digital only bonus track exclusive to Bandcamp.
For the Apple leaning people, the album is available on iTunes for preorder where you will also get ‘Moonlight Bride’ as an instant download.
To support the release of ‘Venus’ we will be playing some select album launch shows in Sydney with Caligula’s Horse on 20 November, Geelong with Teramaze, Vanishing Point, and Damnation’s Day on 10 December as well as some other VIC and NSW shows this year to be announced soon, so keep an eye out!
We also hope to be visiting some other places far and wide next year so hopefully we get to hang out and party with as many of you as possible.
That’s all from us for now, we’d love to hear what you think of the new track and see you on the road.
Heminal love,
Dougie, Mitch, Jess and Nath
