The new Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius music video, “Voodoo Vortex (Part 1)” might remind fans of prog rock, fusion, and classic rock of the 1970s in sound and look. Musically Joe was channeling his favorite fusion violinists—Jean Luc Ponty, Mahavishnu Orchestra’s Jerry Goodman, Didier Lockwood, and Eddie Jobson.
First Joe organized some video imagery generated and edited by Robert Minsk. Next, Joe interspersed photos by (“Impostor!” album designer) Jody Gianni and performance footage shot by (Stratospheerius’ “Outrage Olympics” video director) David Levin from the band’s recent album release party in Rutherford, NJ.
The video premieres at Stratospheerius’ online watch party on YouTube on Friday, February 21, at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT/3 AM on Saturday the 22 in the Netherlands at
“Impostor!” has found fans all over the world. The initial music video “Outrage Olympics” was recently chosen to be featured at the LA-based “Independent Shorts” awards. In the past few months, over 120 stations have picked up the album for airplay, helping the band chart on Relix/Jamband radio, and finding favor on a number of Best of 2024 album lists, including the song “Chasing the Dragon” making its way to Epic Tracks of the Year charts. Now the album’s been picked up for International Distribution in the UK by Burning Shed, and Germany’s Just for Kicks.
The Progressive Aspect’s John Giordano compares “Voodoo Vortex (Part 1)” to King Crimson’s “Matte Kudasai.” “The effects Deninzon uses on the violin deepen the aural interest,” and raves about the “Impostor!” album, “While there is a definite Kansas vibe, no other band sounds quite like Stratospheerius.” The Prog Report’s Prog Nick loves the “glorious melody” of “Voodoo Vortex (Part I).” “Ethereal and hazy to begin with, it develops into an expansive arrangement in 11/8 timing that, despite its complexity, will have your head bobbing. The weaving interplay between Deninzon’s violin and Hubauer’s keyboards will enrapture you, and Gianni holds it all together perfectly, with an economical yet elaborate approach. He is a very fine drummer indeed.”
Joe Deninzon & Stratospheerius released “Impostor!” on Trey Gunn’s 7d Media and features Joe (electric 7-string violin, acoustic violin, viola, chin cello, lead and background vocals, and producer), Michelangelo Quirinale-(Guitars), Paul Ranieri (bass), Jason Gianni (drums), and Bill Hubauer (keyboards). “Impostor!” is mixed and mastered by Rich Mouser (Tears for Fears, Dream Theater, Weezer). The group’s music’s been compared to Rush, Muse, Dream Theater, and Kansas, who welcomed Joe into the band in May 2023. “While Kansas became my main gig, it was my work with Stratospheerius that got their attention.”

Italian prog band Overture just released their second single “Bagliori” from the upcoming album A mezz’aria sul tempo, due out via Melodic Revolution Records later this year.
The Single is a reflection of the emotions its music evoked in us—a deeply personal text penned by our singer on March 14, 2020, just four days after the onset of pandemic confinement. It began as an expression of uncertainty and fear, yet found its conclusion intertwined with melodies infused with soul, written as the world slowly emerged from darkness. The song embodies a journey from turmoil to tranquility—a return to serenity after a harrowing period, much like a stormy sky that, in time, gives way to the radiant sun. It is a testament to the beauty, hope, and resilience of life, conveyed through the comforting words of reassurance to a little girl who was once so afraid.

This is somewhat unusual for a live album in that while it is being released in February 2025, it was only recorded on December 14th, 2024, at the “Antonio Di Iorio” Theater in Atessa. This means there has been no attempt to “clean up” the recording by fixing any bum notes which is to be admired, but there is no doubt there are a few times over the 97 minutes when I think it might have been an idea to clean up a few of the vocals which just miss the mark. What we have here is the same line-up which recorded the 2023 release, ‘MMXX’, and it is probably no surprise that they play the whole of that album given it is the only one this line-up have been involved with, and they bookend the concert with the opening and closing tracks so we start with a song which is more than 23 minutes in length and end with one which is nearly nine, with the other 12 all being somewhat shorter.
Ifsounds have a long history, releasing their debut more than 20 years ago and their first four albums were released under the name If, including 2008’s ‘Morpho Nestira’ which was the first time I came across them. They have had quite a few line-up changes, with only Runal (lead vocals), Dario Lastella (guitar, vocals) and Lino Mesina (drums) still members of the line-up which recorded 2018’s ‘An Gorta Mór’, as well as musical changes, and here they are showing off the depth of their catalogue by including two songs from their early days as If, with the songs being sometimes performed in English and sometimes in Italian.
I must praise the booklet as not only are there some nice photos but there is information provided in both Italian and English, as well as lyrics which is somewhat unusual in live releases. Obviously, if one is going to see a band in concert it is normally because one is aware of the material, and there will be certain songs one would like to hear. Also, a band will generally favour their latest album (unless they have so many popular songs it would be difficult to leave them out of a set). However, what I found with this release is that while it will undoubtedly be of great interest to their fans who have stayed with them over the years, to the average listener there is too much variety and change and I found there were certain songs which made no sense to me in the overall context. There is no doubt that opener ‘MMXX’ is a triumph, while “Stendhal Syndrome” is a nice belter which shows the band in a much rockier and different light to the more RPI approach at other times. But I found working through the album quite disjointed, with the sum of the parts feeling less than the parts themselves.
I have never been worried about bands singing in different languages so the changing between Italian and English is not a concern, it is more the changing in styles. Given the individual songs are often very good indeed, I am sure this is much more down to personal taste than any fault with the band and there will be a great many who will be delighted to have this available. However, I suggest listen before purchase.
With their highly anticipated fourth album, “The Third Sleep”, Norwegian progressive rock band OAK delivers a striking exploration of societal complacency and the struggle of the individual. The album contrasts light and darkness, both thematically and musically, seamlessly blending folk-inspired acoustic passages with the raw intensity of progressive metal, evoking echoes of Opeth and beyond.
On the 25th of April, OAK follows up their highly acclaimed “The Quiet Rebellion of Compromise” with a new album, “The Third Sleep”.
About the album, the band has this to say:
“The Third Sleep continues the development from TQROC lyrically and further descends into the darkness of the mind errands. The form is suggestive and poetic, with room for interpretation within certain limits. The album is also more outgoing than its more introspective predecessor, with socially critical lyrics that require the listener’s attention and an ability to read between the lines.”
With a rich musical foundation that spans classical piano, electronica, progressive and hard rock, Oak has carved out a distinctive sound—both captivating and challenging in equal measure.
Recorded in Ljugekroken (Oslo), the album was mixed by David Castillo (Katatonia, Leprous, Opeth) and mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, Donner) at Dude Ranch Studio, Sandøya.
Prepare to experience “The Third Sleep”, a thought-provoking journey through sound and emotion.

OAK originated as a duo, which expanded into today’s line-up of Simen Valldal Johannessen on vocals, piano and keys, Øystein Sootholtet on bass, acoustic and electric guitars and Sigbjørn Reiakvam on drums, percussion, programming, keys and guitars. The fact that OAK’s members come from diverse backgrounds, which range from classical piano, to electronica, to prog and hard rock, with references to both the alternative scene as well as the progressive rock scene, has allowed OAK to create a unique sound.
