Essential Modern Progressive Rock Albums: Images and Words Behind Prog’s Most Celebrated Albums 1990-2016 Available For Pre-order Now
Earlier this summer, a new book dedicated to the resurgence of one of music’s most enduring and underrated genres was announced from The Prog Report. Essential Modern Progressive Rock Albums: Images and Words Behind Prog’s Most Celebrated Albums 1990-2016, authored by Prog Report editor Roie Avin, is the first book to shine a light exclusively on the important albums of the modern progressive rock era. This new book showcases more than 50 albums from the last quarter century of prog, with each chapter dedicated to one album.
Featuring full-color images of the artists live, original press photos and brilliant album cover art, this 280+ page, softcover coffee table book will be one every prog fan will want to display proudly as a badge of their fandom.
The book, out in late November, is now available for pre-order only at: http://progreport.com/essential-modern-prog-rock-albums/
Preorders come with a download of a chapter from the book on Transatlantic’s The Whirlwind.
Highlighted in the book are prolific and pioneering artists such as Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Spock’s Beard, Marillion, The Flower Kings, Enchant, Fates Warning, Queensryche, and Big Big Train, along with more recent bands like Haken, Karnivool, Riverside, Between the Buried and Me, and The Dear Hunter, among the more than 30 bands included. Drawing on original interviews with band members such as Mike Portnoy, Neal Morse, Steven Wilson, John Petrucci, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Roine Stolt, Pete Trewavas, Ross Jennings, and dozens more, the book offers an in-depth look at the stories behind the albums that shaped the next wave of progressive rock. This book focuses solely on bands that carried the mantle of the genre’s initial ’70s explosion, artists that expanded the genre further, incorporating new sounds and elements to reach new audiences worldwide.
“The last 25+ years have been an incredibly fruitful period for progressive music, as this book indicates. The albums chosen here represent some of the most exciting music created in the modern progressive period, and it’s only right that they claim their moment in the spotlight.” – Jerry Ewing, Prog Magazine
“There certainly was a period when the majority of bands of the New Prog generation, whilst more than competent, sounded just a bit too derivative of their first generation idols. But Roie Avin’s book goes some way to establish the credentials of the more recent Neo-Prog bands as having a far more individual and original voice whether it be the virtuosity of Dream Theater, the creativity and appeal of Big Big Train, or the highly impressive path carved out by Steven Wilson firstly with Porcupine Tree and latterly, in his own right.” – Anthony Phillips, Genesis founding member, and guitarist
“This looks to be an amazing book and a MUST HAVE for Prog fans!” – Mike Portnoy

Hungarian band Special Providence signed to RoSfest 2018
The promoters of RoSfest are excited to announce that Hungarian band Special Providence has been signed for the 2018 edition of the Rites of Spring Festival, and will appear as the third band on Sunday, May 6th.
Special Providence has had a successful history going back to 2004. They remained something of a secret for many years, with their first three albums “Space Cafe” (2007), “Labyrinth” (2008) and “Soul Alert” (2012) released through Hungarian label Hunnia Records. “Soul Alert”, regarded as being a true quality release, started a positive buzz that raised their stature and leads to name recognition. The momentum continued with the release of their fourth album, “Essence of Change” in 2015, when this production was issued by noted progressive rock label, Giant Electric Pea. A fifth album, “Will”, is set to be released in October 2017.
Special Providence has made a name for themselves as being experts at combining jazz, fusion and progressive metal. A band of this kind where the word Progressive is spelled with a capital P. Technically skilled, but also with a deft touch towards creating a strong feel, a good flow and a captivating atmosphere in their compositions. Special Providence is a seasoned live and recording band, and we know that their set will impress our audience. Hungarian progressive rock may not be all that well known in the US, but that interest will rise after 2018 edition of RoSfest.

MULTI-INSTRUMENTALIST LUCAS LEE RELEASES NEW RECORD, FEATURING DRUMMING ICON AND VIRTUOSO: MARCO MINNEMANN
California-based, Canadian multi-instrumentalist Lucas Lee releases a new record, featuring drumming icon Marco Minnemann (Joe Satriani, Steven Wilson, The Aristocrats, Mike Keneally). The 13-track instrumental rock fusion/ progressive rock full concept album is entitled, Acceptances of Gravitational Collapsing Manifestations.
After two previous records featuring virtuosic drumming by Pat Mastelotto and Tobias Ralph respectively, Lee’s new release continues that trend, this time, with Marco Minnemann behind the kit.
The story of the album is about a society where a powerful state’s appetite for power, along with the perpetual greed of mega-corporations, resulted in their continuous collaborations, forming multiple invasive rulings at the expense of citizens’ livelihoods. As unimaginable as some of the abusive trends were, most citizens lacked any willingness to resist, as they saw any action on their behalf involved changes in their addictive lifestyle behaviors. For the few that had the desire to act, they soon realized that there would be no escape.
Lucas: “I am most excited to be able to have Marco, who is widely seen by fans and peers as one of the most talented and creative drummers in the world, to take time out of his insanely busy schedule to play on my record. I think Marco’s signature energy and power really shine through in this one. As a concept album, there’s a definite flow and cohesion amongst the songs, but they were also written in a way to contain plenty of changes and areas for fun, angular grooves. I also wanted to explore areas of complex dense harmony, so there are elements on that front too. The overall process of putting this record together took plenty of time and effort personally, but the experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Hopefully, listeners will enjoy this record as much as the experience of putting it together!”
