Arena release new video for their first ever single ‘Poisoned

Arena are set to release their first ever single ‘Poisoned (single version)’.  The track has been one of the most popular songs from their latest and ninth album, ‘Double Vision’, and was a poignant and much commented on a moment from their last UK and European tour. The single version is a reworked version of the album track and the band have recorded they’re first ever video to accompany the song, which will be released on October 26th, 2018.

The song was written for loved ones and close friends lost to illness and Arena are asking everyone to join the band in commemorating anyone lost to them who represented an important part of their lives.

Fans can join in with the #arenapoisoned campaign by posting a picture and the name of someone important in their life who has passed on, on social media, with the hashtag #arenapoisoned and encourage others to do the same. The band’s plan is to collate the photographs and create a montage of the pictures in a forthcoming vinyl version of Double Vision – something special for posterity.

The Single was released on 26th October.  The single is be available from iTunes, Amazon Music amongst others.

Keyboardist Tim Morse To Release New Album “Tim Morse III”

Songs about spiritual epiphanies, longing, friendship, and loss

Much to the excitement of Prog fans worldwide, keyboardist Tim Morse will be releasing his 3rd album “Tim Morse III” featuring songs about spiritual epiphanies, longing, friendship, and loss. The original idea for Tim’s third album was that it would be a completely solo project where he would play all the instruments and sing all the vocals. However, even at the demo stage he missed the input of others and decided to bring in some of his favorite musicians for cameo appearances (mostly drummers and guitarists).

Says Tim, “I’m not really a multi-instrumentalist – I’m a pianist and guitarist. By extension, I play other keyboards, bass and a little bit of percussion. Anyone can play drums as good as I can! You can hear me play everything on one song ‘The Marquis’ and I play most of the instruments on ‘My Ally’ and ‘Talisman’ as well.

“It was very important to me to get to the ’emotional core’ of the songs on this recording and so I looked for ways to eliminate some of the fiddlings about – don’t get me wrong, this is still a progressive rock album – but I wanted to make sure the message was clear. My work with The Mangoes and the music of some of my favorite recording artists like Field Music and Kevin Gilbert influenced this approach. Also, I knew from the start that there would be a vinyl release and so that was an exciting aspect of the project. It’s been a dream of mine since I was thirteen to release a vinyl album of my original music and it’s finally coming true! I’m very proud of the songwriting on ‘III,’ I definitely feel that it features some of my best work.”

When the writing was finished Tim decided that it was essential to record on as much vintage gear as possible – Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Mini-Moog, and Mellotron samples. He spent a day at the Oakland Vintage Synthesizer Museum tracking songs with all kinds of analog synthesizer goodness (including the mighty Moog Taurus Bass pedals).

Says Tim, “On this recording, I wanted to find the right balance between structure and improvisation. Of course, all of my solos were improvised (most of them are first takes done on the original demos), but even parts that might seem structured were done one pass on the fly. I believe that adds a vital feel to the music. I also kept a lot of scratch tracks where some precision may be sacrificed because the feel of the music was right.”

Most of the recording was done in Tim’s home studio (and others contributed parts from their project studios). However, he did track drums at Andrew Glasmacher’s Studio 12 West in Utah over a few days. Also, all of the lead vocals were recorded at Paradise Studios with Craig Long. Craig is a mini-local legend in northern California, having worked with multi-platinum acts like Cake, Tesla, Bobby Brown, Tony, Toni, Tone! and many others. Tim wanted his expertise for the vocal sessions and Craig also made important contributions to the mix and did the final mastering of “Tim Morse III.”

Tim Morse began his instrument instruction at a young age and started composing immediately upon picking up the guitar. He later moved onto the piano and studied as a music composition major, writing extended pieces such as a string quartet and two piano sonatas. During this time Tim performed with various rock and fusion bands and played on many recording sessions. Tim’s first album of original music was entitled “Transformation” and was released in 2005. The album was well received by the Progressive Rock community and recognized as an original voice, in the tradition of Yes and Genesis, yet recorded and performed with a modern edge.

His second album “Faithscience” was released in 2012 and musically it picked up where “Transformation” left off, continuing to explore the best of Progressive Rock. In addition to this release, Tim became a member of the Jerry Jennings band and formed The Mangoes with Bret Bingham. The Mangoes released their debut album in 2014 and it was embraced for its pop sensibility and quirky humor.

Tim Morse is also a published author and his book “Yesstories” has sold over 20,000 copies worldwide. His book “Classic Rock Stories” was published by the St. Martin’s Press and was featured on the Howard Stern show. He has also written for music magazines over the years including Mix, Guitar World, Keyboard, and Bass Player.

“Tim Morse III” will be released on CD and digital download on October 22, 2018, by Cymbalick Music. There will be a limited edition vinyl LP release of the album in January 2019. Plans for live performances in support of the new album release are in the works.

In closing, Tim has this message for listeners: “I’m always grateful when anyone takes the time to listen to my music, whether they loved it or were critical of it. In this modern age of endless distractions, it is a lovely thing when someone will truly listen to music.”

JASON BECKER ANNOUNCES NEW STUDIO ALBUM TRIUMPHANT HEARTS Out Dec.7, 2018 on Music Theories Recordings

Jason Becker’s story is one of brilliance, talent, determination, adversity, and, ultimately, triumph. A child prodigy on guitar, Jason rose to prominence as a teenager when he was one half of the legendary rock guitar duo Cacophony (with his great friend Marty Friedman).

After wowing audiences all over the world with his amazing guitar chops and deep compositions, Jason got a gig with David Lee Roth, following in the huge footsteps of Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai. He wrote and recorded the DLR album A Little Ain’t Enough and was poised to take over the rock guitar world when a nagging pain in his leg was diagnosed as ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a debilitating and fatal condition with a life expectancy of maybe five years.

Maybe.

That was 29 years ago.

Today Jason’s busier and more prolific than ever, as evidenced by Triumphant Hearts. Many of the guitar parts are performed by a who’s-who of 6-string gods including Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Neal Schon, Steve Morse, Paul Gilbert, Joe Bonamassa, and many others. And, in what will absolutely delight his fans, Jason’s amazing guitar playing—recorded in the ’80s and ’90s—graces several tunes.

Triumphant Hearts will be released worldwide on CD, double vinyl and digital.
The double vinyl includes a code for a complimentary MP3 download of the album.

Free poster with every pre-order from the Official MLG store!

HAKEN launch video for “Puzzle Box”

HAKEN, one of progressive music’s most exciting bands, recently announced details of their much-anticipated fifth studio album titled ‘Vector’, due for release on October 26th, 2018. The album was produced by the band themselves, and recorded & mixed by Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood (Periphery, Devin Townsend Project), with the artwork once again being handled by Blacklake.

Today the band have launched a video for the track “Puzzle Box” which you can watch here:

The band comments: “‘Puzzle Box’ was born from some of the jam sessions we had early on in the writing process. The music has a raw and slightly psychotic nature to it that is brilliantly complimented in Crystal Spotlight’s video. To achieve favourable consequences we suggest taking this dose of Vector at regular intervals throughout the day.”

Fans can enter a competition to win the signed puzzle box from the video here: https://forms.sonymusicfans.com/campaign/haken-pre-save-puzzle-box/

To celebrate the announcement of the new album, the band ran a competition for one lucky fan’s artwork to be etched into the fourth side of the vinyl version of the record. They invited people to submit their own version of the Rorshach test ink-blot which graces the album cover, and the winner was revealed as Shakoor Bukhuth aka SHAUN BEYOND.

Since their inception in 2007, Haken have shown over four previous studio albums, one EP and a live release that they never stand still, merely satisfied to rely on past triumphs. Rather, Haken always look for ways to challenge themselves as musicians and artists, and also to keep the listeners on their collective toes. “We don’t like to make simple music,” laughs vocalist Ross Jennings. “We always aim to defy expectations, and I believe we’ve surpassed what we aimed to achieve with our new album.”

Their fifth studio record sees the band going in a heavier direction with the music. “We’ve always had a heavy influence”, explains guitarist Charlie Griffiths, “but it was obvious from the riffs that were naturally coming out of us early in the writing process that this would be a more metal album. These are some of the most riff driven songs we’ve ever written.” As is usual, Haken produced the album themselves, but for the first time they have enlisted Adam ‘Nolly’ Getgood during the recording and mixing stages. Formerly bassist with Periphery, in the last couple of years he has built a reputation as a fine producer. “We produced the album ourselves, as we always do,” insists Jennings. “But we’re fans of what Adam has done with Periphery, Sikth and Devin Townsend. He has a great reputation for the heavier end of our genre”.

But if this album is musically heavy, then there’s an underlying theme running through the seven songs which is certainly esoteric and fascinating. “The scene is set with the track The Good Doctor, which was a really fun song. Musically it feels like a logical step from ‘Affinity’, but lyrically it’s a bit more theatrical and about as ‘rock opera’ as Haken has ever got”, explains Griffiths. “It’s about a Doctor with an intriguing, perhaps sinister interest in a particular patient. From there the story enters the point-of-view of the patient – who appears to be catatonic, but his mind is sparking with what could be memories, or delusions brought on by the treatment he’s receiving – we leave this up to the listeners to decide. Although we don’t want to give too much away, people who are familiar with our back catalogue will have fun discovering further clues we’ve planted throughout the album. And that’s the challenge for the fans – to find out for themselves their own meaning for ‘Vector’ as an album”.

The Tangent launch new track ‘A Case Of Misplaced Optimism’

THE TANGENT, the progressive rock group led by Andy Tillison, will release their 10th studio album ‘Proxy’ on November 16th, 2018. Recorded during the band’s tour with Karmakanic in 2017/18, which saw them with more chances than normal to work together on the record – hotel writing sessions, van discussions, soundcheck ideas – all of which have allowed the band to make an album that is as organic as they have ever achieved since their formation 15 years ago.

Now they are extremely pleased to launch the first single taken from the album. Listen to ‘A Case of Misplaced Optimism’ here:

Andy comments: “’A Case Of Misplaced Optimism’ is a song of two moods, one of defiant pride and another of wistful regret. It bounces between moody atmospheric grooves and big funky choruses. We wrote it especially, as if this were to be our 45 RPM, 7 inch single in times gone by – the prog rock attempt to have a “hit”. Lyrically it’s a song that looks back on personal life choices frowned upon, even criminalised, in the past – celebrating the changes in society that have made those choices more acceptable and expressing regret for those, who like Alan Turing never lived to see these vital freedoms granted.”

Watch a trailer for the album here, featuring some snippets of brand new music, here:

‘Proxy’ is now available to pre-order as limited CD digipak, 180g vinyl + CD (including several coloured vinyl versions) & as digital download here: https://the-tangent.lnk.to/Proxy

Andy Tillison comments: “Our belief is that Progressive Rock music is still a valid and viable musical form in 2018 and will continue to be so. Our band has always sought to take on board things from the present and add them to that magical mix. We don’t claim to be offering the FUTURE. We just claim to be offering one set of possibilities. Ours. Now.”

‘Proxy’ is a riot of juxtaposing styles, presented in a really direct manner and despite being firmly rooted in the stylistic traits of the Progressive Rock Genre takes some unexpected turnoffs and a major swerve. The albums kicks off with a trademark Tangent prog fantasia based around growling Hammonds, shrieking Synths, whirling guitars and sharp percussive bass – influences of ELP, Egg, Hatfield & the North, Caravan and Camel proudly worn on their sleeves. This 16-minute title track eventually becomes a protest song about the continuing wars that share their name with the song.

But this album features no overall concept. The second track is a sun-drenched Mediterranean fusion instrumental, more Chick Corea than Che Guevara. And the third track is referred to by the band as an attempt to find the missing link between Porcupine Tree and Jamiroquai. By the time we reach the centrepiece epic track ‘The Adulthood Lie’, the rulebook has been left behind and the band are trying to fix the car with whatever is at hand.

The Tangent came of age some time ago now. After 15 years with a constant presence on the periphery of the scene, this album is the next step on the road from a band who have painstakingly revered and recreated the past, with one eye on the future.

The album will be available as a limited CD digipak, Vinyl LP + CD & as digital download. The full track-listing is as follows:

1.Proxy
2.The Melting Andalusian Skies
3.A Case of Misplaced Optimism
4.The Adulthood Lie
