UK Psychedelic Rock Legends Pink Fairies Return With New Album Resident Reptiles

Los Angeles – The legendary UK psychedelic anarchists return with a fantastic new album led by founding Fairy Paul Rudolph! Rudolph is joined by former Hawkwind bassist Alan Davey and original Motörhead drummer Lucas Fox, who not only created a killer rhythm section for the album but added a bit of sizzling biker-rock to the mix!

Another Pink Fairies/Motörhead member, Larry Wallis, was with the band in spirit as they churned out an excellent version of his tune “Old Enuff To Know Better!”

“I’d say this journey started with Nik Turner introducing me to Cleopatra Records. I was asked about the possibility of recording an LP under the Pink Fairies banner and thought – this would be a lot of fun. Get a few people together, turn the amps up to 10 and let ‘er rip.

Larry Wallis wanted to be involved and Matt at Cleopatra suggested Alan Davey on bass and Lucas Fox on drums. It seemed like a good match considering the Hawkwind and Motorhead connections. Both Alan and I had been in Hawkwind and Larry and Lucas in the original Motorhead. We were all mates with Lemmy as well and the creative energy flowed as soon as we got to the studio in Austin.
All of this helped by Jurgen Engler of Die Kruups behind the desk with Eric the engineer.

So here it is – a spontaneous collaboration of ideas recorded mostly live. Thank you for listening.
Peace and Love” – Paul Rudolph

Phideaux set to return at RoSFest in 2019

Roldan Entertainment is happy to announce that US band Phideaux, has been signed to RoSFest for 2019.

Phideaux, the band as well as the main man in the band, are dedicated friends of RoSfest. Phideaux Xavier has actually attended most of our festivals as a guest. We sometimes forget that he is also an excellent progressive rock musician with a top-notch band backing him on stage. Those who remember back to 2011, will recall just how impressive this band is to see live.

Phideaux has been working for around a decade to follow up on his massive success album, “Doomsday Afternoon“, and in 2018 that album is finally here. It is called “Infernal“, and is at the CD pressing plant at the time this press release is written. This is an album that has been eagerly awaited by progressive rock fans worldwide, and we do presume that songs from this album will be at the core of the concert to be given at RoSfest 2019. All existing fans of Phideaux will see that as natural and expected. Obviously, he has a massive back catalog of excellent material to choose from as well, which will ensure a memorable concert experience.

For those who may not be familiar with Phideaux, he has been recording and releasing music since the early 1990’s, and with this year’s album, he has a total of ten studio albums to his name. He is something of an expert in creating atmospheric laden, symphonic progressive rock, often with darker, shimmering Floydian details amidst lighter toned, elegant overlays. His material tends to be developed over many years, and with an immaculate eye for perfection covering even minor, minute details. His last three studio albums, in particular, have been impressive, and expectations are high for the album he is about to launch. In addition, the live performances from him and his band are as impressive as the material found on the albums.

It has been too long since Phideaux last played at RoSfest and we thought it was high time that he returned for the 2019 edition. Especially as the long-awaited “Infernal” now is about to be released.

RoSfest 2019, will take place on May 3rd through 5th, 2019 at the Sarasota Opera House, Florida. The final line-up and schedule for the festival are still TBA. Confirmed bands to appear so far are Jethro Tull 50th Anniversary Tour with Martin Barre, Clive Bunker and, Jonathan Noyce, Riverside, Karmamoi, Edge of Reality, Entransient, & Traverser.

Colouratura – Unfamiliar Skies – Melodic Revolution Records

So I had this playing in the background, but when it started with a corner shop quartet from the Forties I thought I must have put on the wrong playlist. But, what it did do was make me stop whatever else I was doing and concentrate on this, and I am so very glad indeed that I did. What we have here, boys and girls is a progressive rock album in its very truest sense that is designed to drive despair into the heart of anyone brave or stupid enough to try to write a review of it. I’ll leave you to ascertain which camp I fall into, just don’t ask my wife. Progressive rock, by sheer definition, is music that is refusing to sit within any preconceived boundaries, and will not be pigeonholed. Why? Because IT’S NOT A PIGEON!

So let’s start by hanging some labels on this thing, shall we? People like labels. So, there’s some Zappa, yes definitely Zappa, jazz, psychedelia, funk, krautrock, oooh Cardiacs, mustn’t forget Cardiacs, folk, um, kitchen sink, cuddly toy. Must have missed something somewhere. But, the joy of this album is that when it is being played it all makes total sense, and all I want to do when it is finished is to put it on again! It may be incredibly diverse, but not in the way that these guys have pulled it together. Apparently, this is the second release from the band, who comprise just Nathan James (voice, keyboards, bass, horn) and Ian Beabout (flute, editing, sound design, and production) and some assorted guests, which includes Dave Newhouse from The Muffins among others. The use of brass instruments of different types work incredibly well, and there is a passion, lightness, and sense of fun throughout this album which makes it a real joy. This is music with no preconceived ideas or formula, just being taken where it needs to go. If I had my arm twisted behind my back and was asked for a simple subgenre then I would have to plump for crossover prog, but as it is meant to be defined, as there are a real musicality and melody that pervades the whole album.

Available in multiple formats, this is a delight, and the fractured beauty of “Photograph” is required listening for anyone who is fed up with created pop stars. In some alternate universe, it is #1 on the charts.

ARCA PROGJET – ARCA – JOLLY ROGER RECORDS

I very nearly missed out on this one, as although the material was made available to me, I didn’t chase it down as I hadn’t heard the name anywhere, and it’s not as if I am hunting for albums to review. But, I was told that there was a PFM connection so thought that it may well be of interest, and I am glad I did. The label is a new one to me, but looking at their site they have released a lot of material so far. Their stated aim is to only focus on Italian bands, publishing the best from the past and present Italian “hard ‘n’ heavy” scene. The main Italian label I have worked with over the years is Black Widow Records, who concentrate much more on classic Italian progressive rock, so this in itself was intriguing. As to the band themselves, Arca Progjet was originally formed by Alex Jorio (drums, Elektradrive) and Gregorio Verdun (bass and keys), together with Sergio Toya (vocals), Carlo Maccaferri (guitar) and Filippo Dagasso (keyboards and programming). There are also some special guests, including Mauro Pagani, a founder member of PFM who appeared on their first albums before leaving in 1977.

I am guessing that Mauro provides violin, the instrument for which he is best known, but he is more important in having his name connected with this release as opposed to the music he provides on it, as that PFM link is going to get a great deal of people interested – and to be honest it was the reason I listened to this in the first place. But, I am glad that I did as here in an Italian progressive rock band that is using the sounds that one would expect from a band from that country playing this style of music, but also has been brought up to date so while many may expect this to be RPI, there are also elements of neo-prog, hard prog and crossover which make this an incredibly interesting and accessible album on the very first hearing. All lyrics are in Italian, often with harmonies, so I treat the vocals as part of the overall sound, and to my ears it all comes together very well indeed.

If this album had been released on one of the “usual” progressive labels then I am sure that we will have been hearing a great deal more about it, but as it is more “reviews” just seem to mention that it has been released and that it features Pagani. But, this is an accessible progressive rock album with a series of short and direct songs that allows the musicians just enough to room to display their skills without it ever becoming one long solo-fest after another. Two numbers manage to just breach the seven minute barrier, but most are around the five-minute mark, and while the keyboards often use keyboard or mellotron sounds they are never filling the sound and there is always plenty of room for the guitar to be heard as well. This is a really enjoyable album, that definitely deserves to be heard, and as it has been made available on Bandcamp while not give it a try?

CARPTREE – NYMF – FOSFOR CREATION

The first four albums were all released two years apart, but it took three years for the fifth to see the light of day, and what wasn’t understood at the time was that this would be the last album until a return some seven years later with 2017’s ‘Emerger’. Edelönn, Fandén and Perkovic were all still involved alongside the duo of Flinck and Westholm, but there had been a musical shift between this album and the previous ones. There is now a bleakness, almost a desperation, while the music has also become heavier and more symphonic. There is definitely the feeling that the band has become much more of a quintet than just a duo, and while the orchestral feel from the earlier albums is still here, this is a band starting to move away from what they had been doing.

Between this album and the previous one, Westholm had released a couple of albums under the name of Jupiter Society, which were musically very different to Carptree and there is no doubt that at this point this band were moving into a much rockier direction than they had previously. Carl was to become heavily involved in HM acts, including the mighty Candlemass, and although this could never be thought of as a heavy album, it is indeed a step change from what had happened before. Niclas has a voice that I have seen compared to Hogarth, but in fairness to both of them he is much more like Gabriel, and while he has always seemed at home in the gentler material, when given the opportunity to put himself more to the fore, as on the dynamically changing and challenging “Land of Plenty” he relishes the opportunity.

Of the four albums I have heard from Carptree this is definitely the most diverse in its approach, while also the most interesting. I may be behind the times, but I am so glad that this 2010 album has finally come my way.
